Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a national and non profit organization in Canada that aims to work for a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live and raise their family. The mission of the Canadian organization is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. Habitat for Humanity builds all sorts of homes, from small apartments to larger types of real estate. The organization was founded in 1985, and consists of nearly fifty thousand volunteers from coast to coast

Habitat for Humanity mainly works through generous volunteer labour, excellent management partners and tax-deductible donations of both money and materials in order to build homes. Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple houses with the help of the great homeowner families. Generally, Habitat for Humanity houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages, making it easy for a family to afford. Once a home is bought, the homeowners monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is then used to build more houses for the organization. Some people think that Habitat for Humanity is a sort of give away program but that's simply not the case. In addition to mortgage payments, each homeowner invests hundreds of hours of their own labour into the building of their house and then the houses of others.

Being able to qualify for a Habitat home is simple. The three criteria to qualify for a Habitat home are the need for affordable housing, the ability to repay the Habitat mortgage and the willingness to partner with Habitat and help build more real estate for other families in need. Habitat homes are built with generous volunteer labour and as much donated or cost-reduced material as possible. A lot of fundraising also takes place to help offset expenses of materials, services and land when they are not available through donations. Financial support is received from individuals, corporations, service groups and the faith community. The average cost per square foot of Habitat houses in Canada is about fifty dollars. This cost reflects building materials and services only. Any costs associated with acquiring land would be in addition to this, making it that much more essential to receive donations from those who can give.

Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful organization that needs your help to build everywhere. If you are in a place where you can give a donation, please do, because every little bit helps! Visit Habitat.ca to learn more.
